“Write a product description for a desk organiser” leaves most of the product unspecified. An AI tool may fill those gaps with plausible details. Use this brief to collect the facts before generating copy, and keep missing information visible until someone can confirm it.
A product brief you can reuse
Copy the fields below into a document or spreadsheet. Create one record for each sellable variant. Replace the bracketed prompts with your own data; write “unknown” where you do not have an answer. This is a working brief, not a marketplace import format.
- Product and variant
- [Brand, model, product type, colour, size, pack quantity, SKU and product identifier where applicable]
- Destination
- [Marketplace, country, language and product category]
- Material and dimensions
- [Material; width × depth × height with units; weight; distinguish product from packaging measurements]
- Contents
- [Everything supplied; accessories shown in photos but excluded]
- Use and limitations
- [Intended use, compatibility, care instructions and exclusions from product documents]
- Claims and evidence
- [Exact claim; supporting document; model covered; document date and relevant page]
- Safety information
- [Manufacturer details, responsible person where applicable, identifiers and warnings from the product documents]
- Open questions
- [Missing fact; person to ask; answer needed before publication]
- Writing instructions
- [Required output fields, tone, wording to avoid and facts that must remain unchanged]
Filled example: one black desk organiser
Demonstration only: this product and its supporting documents are fictional. The example shows how to structure a brief; it is not evidence for any real product.
- Product
- Fjellmo desk organiser, model D3, black, pack of one.
- Destination
- Amazon.de, German copy. Confirm the category in the seller account before upload.
- Material and dimensions
- Powder-coated steel; external dimensions 22 × 10 × 9 cm (width × depth × height). Source for this exercise: fictional D3 product sheet, revision 1.
- Contents and layout
- One organiser with three fixed compartments and four felt pads underneath. Stationery is not included.
- Unknown
- Internal compartment dimensions, weight and care instructions have not been provided. Manufacturer and safety records still need to be completed before publication.
- Excluded claims
- Do not add scratch protection, recycled content, waterproofing or compatibility with specific stationery sizes. The brief provides no evidence for those statements.
Instructions to paste above the brief
Write a product listing for the marketplace, country and language specified below. Use only facts in this brief. Keep units, quantities, model names and limitations unchanged. Do not infer materials, certifications, performance or compatibility from the product name or photographs. Put unanswered questions in a separate review note, never in customer-facing copy. If a missing fact prevents a required field from being completed, mark that field for review instead of inventing a value. Return the requested listing fields followed by the review note.
Paste the completed brief after these instructions. Then specify the output you need, for example an Amazon title, bullet points and description. Amazon describes its own AI-generated listing content as ready for review; treat your draft the same way.
Compare the draft with the brief
Read each factual statement and point to its source. “Four felt pads underneath” matches the example brief. “Protects every desk from scratches” adds a performance promise that the brief does not support.
Check the numbers separately. A model can preserve “22 × 10 × 9” but swap width and height, or turn a single item into a set. Search the draft for quantities, units and product names before editing the style.
Next, remove vague praise. Replace “a versatile solution for your workspace” with the detail the buyer needs, such as the compartment count or the external width. If no useful fact remains, delete the sentence.
Use the free listing check for text warnings. Keep the source documents for your own review: a clean check result does not confirm that the supplied facts are true.
Reuse the facts for another marketplace
Keep the approved product record separate from each finished listing. When the supplier changes a dimension or accessory, update the record first and then review every affected listing.
The Amazon-to-eBay example shows how the same facts move into different fields. If you are also changing language, use the listing translation guide to review terminology and units.
