Amazon search terms byte counter
Amazon counts backend search terms in bytes, not characters: fewer than 250, so 249 at most, and every ä, ö, ü or ß takes two. Paste your search terms and see as you type what fits and what wastes bytes.
How Amazon counts search terms
The search terms field takes fewer than 250 bytes, so 249 is the most you can use. Amazon counts the text in UTF‑8: letters without accents, digits and spaces take one byte each, every umlaut, “ß” or accented letter takes two. A German field that looks like 240 characters can therefore be well over the limit.
Words already in the title add nothing: Amazon indexes the title anyway. The same goes for a word written twice, for commas and other punctuation, and for brand names — your own or anyone else’s. Each of them costs bytes that could carry a new search word.
Use the room for synonyms, colloquial and regional names, parts of compound words and the uses that are true for the product, in lower case and separated by single spaces. Subjective or temporary words like “beste” or “neu” do not belong in the field.
